Bronzeville Centre for Black Excellence

Through the use of a series of contentious spaces (graffiti walls, 24/7 washrooms, open access enclosures, and contemporary public space), the Bronzeville Centre for Black Excellence (BCBE) promotes the re-acquisition and democratization of public space by enabling the markings inherent to the community to appear on and surrounding the building as a communal patina. It is beyond the scope of this project to propose a solution for racism, rather the BCBE is designed to ameliorate the perception of Black identity by the community and by other ethnicities and to enhance the state of education concerning Black history and a Black context in historical and modern America.
